Earth-Friendly

You ought to feel good about the food you eat
The following practices guide us as we care for the environment, cattle, and you:

  • We raise grass-fed cattle.  Cows naturally eat grass, not corn.  We believe it's how it was meant to be.  On our farm, cows feed only on grass from our chemical-free pastures and hay fields.
  • Healthy soil means healthy animals.  We don't believe in applying synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides to our fields, and nor do we routinely till the soil.  Not only does this result in cattle without chemicals, it improves biodiversity of the soil organisms.
  • No GMOs (genetically modified organisms).  We won't plant or feed GMO's to our cows.
  • Sick animals deserve our help.  We occasionally need to use veterinary medicine to treat illness, but we'll never, ever, use medication as a way increase weight gain.  Most of our animals go their whole lives without medication.  Meat from treated animals is only sold to customers who agree to accept it.
  • Give the land a break. Our system of rotational grazing is important for soil fertility and grass health.  And while we might do a lot of extra mowing to control weed growth, our practice of avoiding soil cultivation prevents soil erosion and deterioration.
  • Calves belong with their mamas.  We acquire weaned calves to raise on our chemical free farm because we want them to nurse from their mothers and not be bottle-raised on milk substitutes.
  • Protect waterways.  We fence off creeks to protect the water quality.
  • No barbed wire.  It contains the cattle by causing injury and pain.  Electric fences, while unpleasant to touch, are considered a psychological barrier and much more humane.
  • It's important to partner with like-minded farmers.  When we buy young cattle, or in the unusual circumstance that we must purchase hay, we try to buy from local people we trust, people whose farming practices are as close to ours as possible.
